Why You Need an E-commerce Solution for Your Business?

Thanks to the advancement in communications and transportation technology, today we live in a global economy where services and goods are traded 24 hours a day, seven days a week, between sellers and customers all over the globe. In this context, e-commerce allows companies to reach out to clients all over the word, regardless of distance or time difference.

Thus, e-commerce development is vital for keeping a company competitive in this world market. And even if you sell only at a local level, there are many advantages to e-commerce development.

Fist of all, it's a great way to allow your customers to get to know your company and its products. Not only that, but frequent clients can process their regular orders through your site in an easier, efficient way that doesn't require time or long distance calls.

Second, since regular orders are processed in exactly the same way, when you automate them, you liberate your customer service staff's time and assign them to exceptions and special orders that require human thought and the ability to make decisions.

Finally, a third advantage of e-commerce development is that it allows you to be available at any time to any client in any part of the world. You don't even have to be awake, as a customer in a very far country can come to your site, get information on the products he or she needs, order them, and pay them before it's morning in your area.

Of course, there are many more advantages of e-commerce development for a company. In fact, today, companies don't ask themselves whether go online or not, but rather HOW to go online so that their site stands out among the thousands of others and gets the customer.

There’s More to an E-Commerce Site than Meets the Eye

There's More to an E-Commerce Site than Meets the Eye

Ecommerce developer shares success tips for prospective e-merchants.

(PRWEB) January 31, 2010 -- InfoShore Software Private Ltd. (http://www.infoshore.biz) today announced a campaign to help businesses reach their ecommerce goals by sharing with them the requirements of a successful ecommerce site.

InfoShore Software Private Ltd.
One of the biggest issues facing online e-tailers is a phenomenon known as shopping cart abandonment rate. The term refers to instances where a customer will select an item, place it in the online cart, and then leave the site without checking out.
There is no doubt that good graphics and templates contribute to the success of any web site. But when it comes to selling products or services, it takes more than a pretty face to succeed in ecommerce.

"The difference between making a sale and losing a customer to a competitor is often as simple as the number of clicks it takes to select a product, put it into the shopping cart, and checkout," according to Ashish Arora, InfoShore Software's Director. "I am always amazed at how many ecommerce web sites erect barriers making it difficult for customers to spend money," Mr. Arora added.

One of the biggest issues facing online e-tailers is a phenomenon known as shopping cart abandonment rate. The term refers to instances where a customer will select an item, place it in the online cart, and then leave the site without checking out.

According to a study by PayPal®, a leading ecommerce payment service provider, shopping cart abandonment occurs for a number of reasons over which InfoShore Software says every online merchant has control.

Merchants can help avoid experiencing the ecommerce industry's average 45% cart abandonment rate by looking at their site's shopping process through their customer's eyes.

Some common abandonment issues include:

  • Lack of an onsite product feature comparison tool
  • No link to customer service
  • Confusing checkout or registration procedure
  • No easy way for existing customers to retrieve user names or passwords.

"Even ecommerce site owners who use the most popular ecommerce development platforms like OS Commerce, or those who own a Yahoo Store, risk losing customers due to poor shopping cart implementation," noted Mr. Arora.

That's why he suggests that online store owners partner with an ecommerce development company that understands the technology side of online shopping as well as the human side.

As more people find themselves out of work or caught in the crunch of the global economic meltdown, the number of first-time ecommerce hopefuls is expected to soar.

But Mr. Arora warns that "Enthusiasm and dreams are no substitute for a solid ecommerce experience. And that lack of experience is responsible for the current 97% failure rate among new ecommerce web sites."

Mr. Arora hopes he can help bring down those rates by sharing his ecommerce development experience with anyone seeking solid advice.

Prospective ecommerce site owners are invited to learn more by visiting the InfoShore Software web site: http://www.infoshore.biz .

Mozilla Weave hits 1.0, keeps all your Firefox installs in sync!

Mozilla Weave hits 1.0, keeps all your Firefox installs in sync!
by Lee Mathews (RSS feed) Jan 29th 2010 at 8:03AM

Weave, Mozilla's browser sync tool, has finally hit version 1.0 -- for both the desktop and mobile versions of Firefox!

Install the add-on in your browser, and you can securely sync your Firefox profile data like bookmarks, history, passwords -- even the tabs you have open -- across all the machines on which you run it. Weave accounts are free to create, and your information is encrypted, password-protected, and parked in Mozilla's cloud until you need to access it from elsewhere.

Nokia N900 owners, Weave will seamlessly link your desktop and handset browsers keeping things perfectly synced up while you browse on the go.

So what won't Weave synchronize? Your addons, personas, search plugins, and under-the-hood customizations (like about:config tweaks). According to Mozilla, we just need to have a little patience -- they fully intend future versions of Weave to be able to sync everything which makes your Firefox truly yours.

Head on over to Mozilla Labs and grab Weave 1.0! Have questions you need answered? Check the Weave FAQ and Mozilla forums, or post a comment here!

ATI Releases ATI Catalyst 10.1 Drivers, Now with Support for Ubuntu 9.10

ATI Releases ATI Catalyst 10.1 Drivers, Now with Support for Ubuntu 9.10 | Maximum PC
Posted 01/28/10 at 08:05:51 AM by Paul Lilly

AMD this week released the first of twelve scheduled Catalyst launches this year, the first of which brings the driver suite up to version 10.1.

The new driver package offers a pinch of performance improvements, including up to a 3 percent boost in Left for Dead 2 on ATI Radeon HD 5700 and 5800 series videocards, as well as boosts Crysis framerates by up to 3 percent on ATI Radeon HD 5700 cards and up to 4 percent on 5800 hardware.

There are a bunch of bug fixes, many of them Windows 7 specific, and all of which you can read in the release notes (PDF). But the big news for Linux fans is the introduction of production support for Ubuntu 9.10, otherwise known as Karmic Koala. Available for both x86 and x86_64 distros, the latest Catalyst package resolves a bunch of open-source issues, including:

  • X.Org no longer crashes on an Ubuntu 9.10 system, if multiple Xinerama-enabled X.org server generations are executed.
  • Switching between virtual desktops no longer breaks the OS.
  • Single mode is now shown properly in the "Display Manager Properties" tab of the ATI Catalyst Control Center, instead of multiple modes, if the "big desktop" mode is enabled
  • The system no longer crashes if an HDMI monitor is hot-plugged, or if the users toggle between HDMI and LCD.
  • Fixed an issue on Ret Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 32-bit systems, when the "Detect Displays" button was selected in ATI Catalyst Control Center, and an HDMI display was hot-plugged.

ATI's Linux driver supports Red Hat Enterprise, Novel SUSE Enterprise, openSUSE, and Ubuntu.

Merchant shifts to e-store venue

Terrace Standard - Merchant shifts to e-store venue
Published: January 26, 2010 11:00 PM

THE INTERNET IS changing the idea that a small business needs a bricks and mortar presence to prosper.

Lance Dettwiler is the latest entrepreneur to challenge that axiom.

His home decorating store Maison Décor on the 4600 block of Lakelse Ave. is closing down at the end of this month in favour of moving to an on line e-store.

Dettwiler said the online store is cheaper, with the costs for the domain and web fee much lower than rent and utilities. "It all adds up," he said of the overhead.

Also, he said customers from Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlottes were asking about an online store. Dettwiler has had his e-store up for about eight months now and said it has worked out well so far.

"I'm getting more traffic on my web store than (here)," he said, saying the e-store was getting about 100 hits compared to 15-20 people coming through the door a day.

"I did a bit of a trial run," he said, adding that business online has picked up lately. There has been about 15 sales through his online store in the last two months.

"It opens up the whole north for me," he said, explaining that the online store also opens him up to clientele he otherwise wouldn't have; some customers have even been from the United States.

While Dettwiler said he will miss ordering, unpacking, decorating the store and conversing with customers – the store has been open since June 15, 2006 – he said this may give him a chance to widen his product range. His prices will also be lowering, as he has little overhead costs with the online store. "People think I'm closing out because times are hard, and it's not that," he said.

The move to an online store will allow Dettwiler to have more time with his family and focus on his two other businesses on the 4600 block of Lakelse Ave – Villa 46 and Elephant's Ear, which he co-owns with business partner James Cordeiro.

What *is* PayPal Express Checkout in Zen Cart

What *is* PayPal Express Checkout in v1.3.7 ? - Zen Cart Support

Zen Cart v1.3.7 out-of-the-box supports PayPal Express Checkout.
This allows your customers the convenience of shortening the checkout process by logging in to their PayPal account, selecting a shipping address, and returning to your site to confirm their order.

To use Express Checkout, you only need a PayPal "business" account. You do *not* need to subscribe to "Website Payments Pro" services.

How it Works

Once the customer (logged in or not) has something in their cart, the Express Checkout button will show on the Shopping Cart page just below the regular Checkout button. Clicking that button begins the Express Checkout process, taking them to PayPal to choose their funding source and shipping address. Then they are returned to your site to complete checkout.

Shipping

It bypasses your normal Shipping page by auto-selecting the least-expensive shipping method available for their shipping address, as configured by your store's shipping options.
You can force it to allow the customer to go directly to the shipping page by setting the appropriate switch in the PayPal Express Checkout payment module in the Zen Cart admin.
The customer can change their shipping choice by clicking the Edit button next to their shipping address on the confirmation page.

Payment Page

It bypasses the payment page because it knows that PayPal is their choice at this point in the transaction.
HOWEVER, if your store has coupons activated or has gift certificate support enabled, then the customer will see the Payment page before they get to the Confirmation page -- so that they can enter their coupon code or select the amount of gift certificates they wish to apply to their order.

Confirmation Page

If the customer has already gone to the PayPal site and selected their funding source and shipping address, then when they click "confirm" on your Confirmation page, their order will be processed, payment collected, and their order number will be displayed on the Checkout-Success page. Their order will be immediately available in the Admin area, and in most cases "released" immediately, making downloads etc available right away.

If the customer goes back and does additional shopping, or if they proceed through checkout in the traditional fashion, they may still choose PayPal on the Payments page, or choose from the other enabled payment modules. In this case, they will be taken to the PayPal website to confirm their payment and shipping details after they Confirm their order on your site.

New Customers

If the customer visiting your store doesn't already have an account and uses PayPal Express Checkout, an account is created automatically for them, and their password is emailed to them in the Welcome Email which sends when they return from the PayPal site after entering their PayPal login details and selecting their funding/shipping options.

Customers can then use this account to log in again later and re-access their downloadable items or check on order status.

For those shopowners wishing to not create accounts for their customers, they may set the switch in the PayPal Express Checkout module which marks the account as "temporary" and skips the welcome email and sending the password to the customer. The account will still be created and remain available until the same customer does another Express Checkout purchase, at which time the temporary account will be deleted and a new one created.

NOTE: Accounts are made permanent and the welcome email+password are automatically sent regardless of this "temporary" setting *if* the customer's order contains downloadable items or gift certificates.

Google's Go is the TIOBE Programming Language of 2009!

TIOBE Software: Tiobe Index

TIOBE Programming Community Index for January 2010
January Headline: Google's Go is the TIOBE Programming Language of 2009!

Google's brand new programming language Go has won the "TIOBE's Programming Language of the Year 2009" award. This award is given to the programming language that gained most market share in 2009. Go had an increase of 1.25% since its official release announcement in November 2009. The difference with the runner-up is only 0.01%: Apple's language Objective-C scored a positive trend of 1.24% in one year's time.

Is Go a hype? May be. But even if it appears to be just another language, the fact that it is a language designed by Google is sufficient to make it really popular. Nobody will be blamed to use a language that is associated with the Google brand name. Apart from that, there is also something technically promising about Go. It has native support for concurrent programming, thus fulfilling the existing need of a language that allows efficient use of multicore processors.

It is astonishing to see that a programming language can rise so fast. Go was not listed yet last month and now it is already #13. This sudden change might be considered an inevitable consequence of our current culture, in which new information is spread and used around the globe at the speed of light.

Also close this year was PHP. It gained 1.19% in 2009 and surpassed Visual Basic and C++ to become number 3 of the chart. More information about trends and forecasts can be found in the news flash at the end of this page.

The TIOBE Programming Community index gives an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, Yahoo!, Wikipedia and YouTube are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TIOBE index is not about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written.

The index can be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date or to make a strategic decision about what programming language should be adopted when starting to build a new software system. The definition of the TIOBE index can be found here.
