E.gg Timer –

http://www.appinn.com/e-gg-timer/

Google Reader

http://www.xjp.cc/2010-log/09/reader-tips-and-recommended-rss.html

5 free online services that store, sync and share your files

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9179418/5_free_online_services_that_store_sync_and_share_your_files_?taxonomyId=19

You can upload your files to a 'virtual hard drive' and access them from your other devices

By Howard Wen
July 23, 2010 06:00 AM ET

Computerworld - "Syncing to the cloud" may sound like marketing-speak, but it's actually a convenient thing to do: Upload your important files to an online server and access them from any of your other computers and mobile devices.

Cloud-based syncing services usually use a virtual drive that exists on your desktop in some manner, and it is linked directly to your online storage space. The contents of this virtual hard drive remain in sync across all of the desktops, notebooks and mobile devices on which you have installed the client software.

You designate which files or folders that you want to be part of the virtual drive; everything on that drive is then automatically uploaded to an online server. From there it is accessible (by logging on with a username and a password) from your other devices, either from another installed version of the application, or via a Web interface. And you can grant other people access.

For this roundup, I chose five services that store, sync and share your files in the cloud: DriveHQ, Dropbox, OpenDrive, SpiderOak and ZumoDrive. I reviewed them using their desktop front-end clients, and I used only the free account versions of these services (because everybody likes free stuff). Most of these also offer paid upgrades; in those cases, I list the other options that are available.

Incidentally, until recently Microsoft offered its own data synchronization service, called Live Mesh, but it's now defunct. Another Microsoft service, Windows Live Sync, doesn't have direct syncing access to an online storage space. However, features of Live Mesh have been incorporated into the upcoming version of Windows Live Sync as part of Windows Live Essentials.

The new Windows Live Sync will give you 2GB of online storage for syncing files. Unfortunately, the next version of Windows Live Essentials won't run on Windows XP, so XP users may want to check out the services in this roundup.

“Tinyurl”-ify DropBox Public Links With .htaccess

http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/tag/dropbox/
November 8th, 2008

I just recently started using DropBox on Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" and leftyfb in IRC pointed out to me a nifty little trick with .htaccess files. If you've been using DropBox I'm sure you've seen or made use of the Public folder and sharing files. You may have also noticed that the DropBox Public links are long and likely hard to remember when needed.

One thing that you can do, if you have your own web server, is dynamically generate these public links. For example:

Original DropBox Public URL:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/312414/Christer_Edwards.asc

DropBox Public URL with .htaccess trick:

http://zelut.org/dropbox/Christer_Edwards.asc

In order to accomplish this you'll need access to a webserver and the ability to create and use a .htaccess file. On my webserver I created a folder called "dropbox" and then pasted the following into a new file, .htaccess:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/012345/$1 [L,QSA]

You will need to replace the "012345″ with your unique ID. As you notice from the original link above, my unique ID is "312414″. You can find yours by copying the public link within Nautilus.

Once this is done you can share files by placing them into your DropBox Public folder and then appending the filename to your webserver URL + created folder. Again, since I created the folder "dropbox" on http://zelut.org/, my url is http://zelut.org/dropbox/. I simply append the filename I want to share and its done!

If anyone can suggest a way to present this URL with an index.html that may be a cool trick.

wget -O dropbox.tar.gz http://www.dropbox.com/download/?plat=lnx.x86

tar -zxof dropbox.tar.gz

mv .dropbox-dist ~

Dropbox

~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd &

The computer xxx was linked to your account",表明该服务器已经连接好。

cd ~/Dropbox

killall dropbox

Windows Live Sync vs. Live Mesh vs. SkyDrive: Which is Right for You?

http://www.labnol.org/internet/compare-windows-live-sync-mesh-and-skydrive/6166/
December 20, 2008

The new Windows Live suite includes three different services for file storage and online synchronization. They are called Live Mesh, Windows Live Sync andWindows Live SkyDrive – all apps are available for free and you just need a Windows Live account to get started.

Windows Live SkyDrive

Windows Live SkyDrive is an online file storage service similar to Box.net. You can manually upload documents, pictures and other files to Windows Live servers via the browser and your uploads will remain accessible from any other computer or web-enabled mobile phone.

Windows Live SkyDrive requires no installation and you get 25 GB of free storage space though the maximum size of an individual file / document cannot exceed 50 MB. Each file or folder on SkyDrive has a unique Web address (URL), so you can easily paste that link into email messages or other documents for direct access.

Windows Live Sync

Windows Live Sync

Windows Live Sync, formerly known as FolderShare, is a desktop app + web service that lets you sync files and folders across different computers. You can synchronize up to 20 folders containing up to 20,000 files each. Individual files cannot be larger than 4 GB in size.

Say you have music files stored in your home computer's hard disk and want to access this collection from the Office computer. Simply install Windows Live Sync of both the computers and add "my music" folder to your "personal folders" – now your entire music collection will be accessible from either of these computers.

Windows Live Sync also lets you remotely access your files on the hard drive from any other computer via the browser without setting up synchronization. This is handy in situations like where you have to download a presentation from your work computer that's saved on the desktop – just browse to the desktop folder via Live Sync website and download the file.

Other than online synchronization, Windows Live Sync also lets invite family members and colleagues (as readers, contributors or owners) to access certain folders on your computer though they will have to install the Live Sync software for this.

Windows Live Mesh

Windows Live Mesh - Web View

Live Mesh includes everything that Windows Live Sync has to offer plus two extra features – cloud storage and remote desktop (with support for copy-paste).

You first need to download the Live Mesh software and then select folders / files that you want to sync with other computers. The process is almost the same as Live Sync but here you can add folders for synchronization from Windows Explorer itself (right click any folder and click "Add Folder to Live Mesh") while Live Sync only offers a web interface to explorer.

When you add any folder to Live Mesh for synchronization, a copy of that folder gets stored online so you will always have access to your files even if the main computer is offline. This service is known as Live Desktop and offers 5 GB of online storage space.

Another important difference between Live Mesh and Windows Live Sync is Live Remote Desktop – Live Mesh lets you completely control the remote desktop just like other screen sharing application. You can even copy files and folders from the remote desktop to your local desktop through simple copy paste – copying folders manually is not possible in Windows Live Sync.

Both Live Mesh and Windows Live Sync offer clients for Windows and Mac but you may also install Live Mesh on mobile phones running Windows Mobile 6.1 or later.

Which Live Service is right for me? As expected, each of these Live services do have some overlapping features. Live Skydrive is for online storage, Live Sync is primarily for folder synchronization across computers (no storage) while Live Mesh offers a good mix of both though with limited storage space(5GB). Therefore my suggestion would be to go with SkyDrive as well as Live Mesh – you'll get plenty of storage space plus remote desktop plus you can access important files from any other computer.
