Extensions are designed to add extra functionality to the browser and are also designed to generally only work in chrome. The chrome Web Store will show web applications that can be run in any modern browser that supports some feature's such as html5. However there are some advantages to use there applications with chrome such as shortcuts placed in the browser and more functionality.
