Microsoft, Google Take Aim at Each Other

16 July 2009

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.

Google, the Internet search leader, will now offer a free operating system for personal computers. The company hopes to loosen Microsoft's hold on the market. Microsoft Windows is on more than ninety percent of PCs.

Google is basing the new product on its Chrome Web browser and the Linux open-source operating system. The Google Chrome OS is expected to be available in the second half of next year.

At first, it will be aimed at netbooks. These are smaller, simpler machines designed mainly for Internet use.

Google's chief executive, Eric Schmidt, says Chrome will pay for itself. It will do that, he says, by reducing the cost of computers and increasing the number of people who search the Internet. Google earns most of its money from sales of advertising on its search engine.

But the recession has hurt the advertising market. And now Microsoft has targeted Google's main business. Microsoft says its new Bing search engine offers a better way to search the Internet. Ads for it make fun of how Web searches often give people a lot of useless results.

COMMERCIAL: "Find a cure at bing.com. It's not just a search engine. It's the first-ever decision engine. From Microsoft."

A Web traffic report last Friday from StatCounter said Bing twice passed Yahoo in usage in the United States in its first few weeks. Yahoo is the second biggest search engine.

But no one has the answer to how much market share Bing will claim from Yahoo or Google in the long term. Microsoft, in its struggle against Google, tried unsuccessfully last year to buy Yahoo for more than forty billion dollars.

Google and Microsoft are also competing in business software. Google offers Google Docs. These applications are free and on the Web. They compete with Microsoft Office, a hugely popular product. Next year, Microsoft plans a new version of Office that is both Web-based and free.

Also, Microsoft plans to launch its seventh version of Windows this October. And the company is preparing to open its own stores, like its competitor Apple. In fact, some Microsoft stores could open right next to Apple stores in the coming months.

The recession has cut sales of PCs and software. But there may be hopeful signs for the industry. Intel is the leading maker of computer processors. This week Intel reported that its results for the past three months were better than expected. And it predicted more good news in the current quarter.

MySQL Commands

Posted on 07-25-2007 00:13:00 UTC | Updated on 01-23-2009 16:29:23 UTC
Section: /software/mysql/ | Permanent Link

This is a list of handy MySQL commands that I use time and time again. At the bottom are statements, clauses, and functions you can use in MySQL. Below that are PHP and Perl API functions you can use to interface with MySQL. To use those you will need to build PHP with MySQL functionality. To use MySQL with Perl you will need to use the Perl modules DBI and DBD::mysql.

Below when you see # it means from the unix shell. When you see mysql> it means from a MySQL prompt after logging into MySQL.

To login (from unix shell) use -h only if needed.

# [mysql dir]/bin/mysql -h hostname -u root -p

Create a database on the sql server.

mysql> create database [databasename];

List all databases on the sql server.

mysql> show databases;

Switch to a database.

mysql> use [db name];

To see all the tables in the db.

mysql> show tables;

To see database's field formats.

mysql> describe [table name];

To delete a db.

mysql> drop database [database name];

To delete a table.

mysql> drop table [table name];

Show all data in a table.

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name];

Returns the columns and column information pertaining to the designated table.

mysql> show columns from [table name];

Show certain selected rows with the value "whatever".

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE [field name] = "whatever";

Show all records containing the name "Bob" AND the phone number '3444444'.

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE name = "Bob" AND phone_number = '3444444';

Show all records not containing the name "Bob" AND the phone number '3444444' order by the phone_number field.

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE name != "Bob" AND phone_number = '3444444' order by phone_number;

Show all records starting with the letters 'bob' AND the phone number '3444444'.

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE name like "Bob%" AND phone_number = '3444444';

Show all records starting with the letters 'bob' AND the phone number '3444444' limit to records 1 through 5.

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE name like "Bob%" AND phone_number = '3444444' limit 1,5;

Use a regular expression to find records. Use "REGEXP BINARY" to force case-sensitivity. This finds any record beginning with a.

mysql> SELECT * FROM [table name] WHERE rec RLIKE "^a";

Show unique records.

mysql> SELECT DISTINCT [column name] FROM [table name];

Show selected records sorted in an ascending (asc) or descending (desc).

mysql> SELECT [col1],[col2] FROM [table name] ORDER BY [col2] DESC;

Return number of rows.

mysql> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM [table name];

Sum column.

mysql> SELECT SUM(*) FROM [table name];

Join tables on common columns.

mysql> select lookup.illustrationid, lookup.personid,person.birthday from lookup left join person on lookup.personid=person.personid=statement to join birthday in person table with primary illustration id;

Creating a new user. Login as root. Switch to the MySQL db. Make the user. Update privs.

# mysql -u root -p

Change a users password from unix shell.

# [mysql dir]/bin/mysqladmin -u username -h hostname.blah.org -p password 'new-password'

Change a users password from MySQL prompt. Login as root. Set the password. Update privs.

# mysql -u root -p
mysql> SET PASSWORD FOR 'user'@'hostname' = PASSWORD('passwordhere');
mysql> flush privileges;

Recover a MySQL root password. Stop the MySQL server process. Start again with no grant tables. Login to MySQL as root. Set new password. Exit MySQL and restart MySQL server.

# /etc/init.d/mysql stop
# mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &

Computers and Eye Strain

Computers and Eye Strain
July 13, 2009

Do you find yourself squinting more? Maybe you are having more difficulty driving at night? Do your eyes get irritated or drier than usual? It could be how you are looking at the computer. Our eyes were designed for hunting or looking at long distances. Now with computers in schools, homes, laps and video games and iPods, more people are staring at smaller and smaller screens in wrong lighting and incorrect positions. You can relieve some of this strain yourself.

Position Screen
The computer or video screen should be slightly below eye level (about 20 degrees). Now with laptops, it is easy to place your computer on your lap which makes it way below eye level. Use a lap pillow or position yourself so the screen is no more than 30 degrees velow eye level.

Use Good lighting
Avoid working in rooms that are dark or too dim. Use an adjustable table lamp that can be aimed by you without causing screen reflections. Eliminate glare and screen reflections by moving or tilting the computer or getting an anti-glare screen. Try not to face toward windows or bright light source. Make sure the light in the room is about equal to the brightness of the display. Movie theaters are okay because the huge screen fills up the room with light.

Adjust Brightness
Viewing a dark screen is better than a bright, white screen. If you are staring at a white background, adjust the screen brightness and contrast so it is not as bright. Try searching with Blackle instead of Google. Search results are the same. You might want to clean your screen regularly since screens attract dust.

Take Breaks
If you spend hours starting at a computer or play video games, try to take a break every 20 minutes. Set a timer using an online stopwatch. Computer use results in a decrease in blinking to almost one third of normal. Stop occasionally and blink. Look away from the monitor at least 20 minutes but if you can it is even better to look away every 10 minutes.

Do Eye Exercises
Close your eyes tightly for 5 seconds and then open them. Repeat this 5 or 6 times every 10-20 minutes. This will relieve some of your strain. You can even use a warm washcloth lightly pressed to your eyes. Don't rub your eyes too hard because it can break blood vessels. And like I wrote in the last paragraph, blink. During your break, focus on something far away for a minute or two.

Consider Using Reading Glasses
Even if you have prescription glasses, your prescription may not work for the computer. Position yourself at least 15 inches away from the screen and try different readers. If you have to strain with or without your prescription glasses, you can try some fun readers that help you read small text and sit farther away from the screen.

Make Text Bigger
You can increase the text size on any web page. Some sites give you the option with A AA. If they don't have that option, you can increase the size yourself by pressing Ctrl - + (add) once or more times depending on the size you want the text. To make it smaller, press Ctrl - - (subtract).

Charge of Google's light brigade

BBC NEWS | Business | Charge of Google's light brigade

ANALYSIS
By Tim Weber
Business editor, BBC News website

Chrome logo
Google's operating system aims to tempt people away from Windows

So at long last Google is making its move. Promising a lightweight but fast operating system - Chrome OS - the internet search company is poised to strike at the heart of Microsoft's software empire.

The Windows operating system is Microsoft's cash cow, powering about 90% of the world's personal computers, and as a result accounting for the majority of its profits.

The benefits are wider, though. Every Windows desktop comes with an invitation (and at times the imperative) to use other Microsoft software and services.

This, in turn, hobbles Google's ambition of organising all the world's information, and making money on the back of it.

After all, most people's computer experience is bogged down with frustration - from the time it takes to start a computer, to software conflicts, and worries about viruses and malware (or for Apple Macs the cost of buying a computer).

Clash of business models

Soon those people who are spending more of their time in the company of Google rather than Microsoft will have the opportunity to use the Chrome OS for all their computing needs
Rory Cellan-Jones
BBC's technology correspondent

Google promises to change all that by stripping desktop computing to its basics. Your PC won't have to do the heavy lifting, applications will run in your browser instead, powered by Google's huge server farms.

It comes down to a clash of business models. Microsoft earns money by charging customers a one-off fee for its operating system, probably $20 for its old Windows XP software, and a rumoured $150 for Windows Vista and the forthcoming Windows 7, which is due to go on sale this autumn.

Google is unlikely to charge for Chrome OS. The company wants you to get online fast, have a whale of a time... and use as many Google services as you can: from search to email, social networking to photo sharing, word processing, to watching films on YouTube.

It is yet another incarnation of the company's "Google everywhere" strategy.

Google, the software firm

Chrome OS also shows what you can achieve when you sit on a huge cash pile, attract some of the world's best software engineers and - most importantly - start with a blank slate.

Google has a track record. Not that long ago the firm announced that it was developing an operating system for smartphones, dubbed Android (which is distinct from Chrome OS).

Microsoft executives that I spoke to back then were dismissive, arguing that Google was underestimating the complexity of such a venture. But already Android is in many ways a more accomplished piece of software than version 6.1 of Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

Google is helped by the fact that unlike Microsoft it has no need to worry about compatibility with legacy software.

That, however, could also be the Achilles heel of Chrome OS.

Consumers who want to buy a Chrome OS computer will have to start with a blank slate as well. Any software that they hold near and dear is unlikely to be compatible with the new system.

And they have to limit their ambitions. If you play computer games, do heavy-duty video or picture editing, or need any kind of specialised software, then you'll return to the shelves heaving with Microsoft powered PCs or Apple Macs.

Timing is everything

As you make your buying decision, you will have this niggling worry that one day, maybe, you will need to use some software that simply can't run in your browser. The advertising campaigns of both Apple and Microsoft will have a great time stoking these worries.

Google's announcement comes at an interesting time. Microsoft is poised to launch its new operating system Windows 7. Unlike its predecessor Vista, Windows 7 is proven to be a good fit for ultraportable netbooks, currently the fastest growing segment of the PC market.

So Chrome OS, due in mid-2010, may come either at just the right time, as the economy recovers and consumers go shopping again, or it may come too late, with Windows 7 already firmly hogging the market.

Chrome impact

In the end, Google's strike may not cut deep into enemy territory.

Chrome, the web browser, is still stuck at a tiny market share of 1.2%. Android is available on just two or three phones, not enough to really make an impact.

Google Apps - productivity software to handle spreadsheets and word documents - has just come out of its "beta" test phase, but look around you and you will find most people still using Microsoft Office.

The one field where Chrome OS may make a difference is the market for the open source Linux operating system. Chrome OS will use bits of the Linux kernel, the link between the computer hardware and the Chrome browser running on it.

Google is bound to make Chrome OS much more user-friendly than most "distros" or versions of Linux available right now. Instead of slaying Microsoft, Chrome OS might corner the segment of the consumer space that might have been Linux's.

No doubt, Google's charge with Chrome OS will needle Microsoft. But we won't know for years whether it will deliver a mere pinprick, or is the fine point of the dagger at the heart of Microsoft.

10 great ways to optimize your Wordpress blog

10 great ways to optimize your Wordpress blog
July 7, 1:06 PM

Creating an effective presence in the blogosphere has become far more competitive in recent years. With the steady growth of Facebook and Twitter, blogs are morphing into social media micro sites of their social network affiliates. I only host sites on Linux backed servers for performance and security purposes. Some of the following suggestions can only be applied in a LAMP environment (i.e. - askapache's .htaccess tweaks). Here are a few tips and plugins that I have found have worked quite well. I cannot take full credit for these so please make sure to check out the developers associated with each tweak for further information.

1. Install All-in-One SEO Pack by hallsofmontezuma and Google XML Sitemap plugin by Arne Brachhold. Post titles should appear before site name and sitewide keywords should mirror Google Adwords for relevant keyword searches. Also, regularly resubmit and update your xml sitemap and robot.txt files. I know this goes without saying, but it's something I sometimes forget to do.

2. Install Wp-Super Cache by Donncha O Caoimh. This will greatly speed up page load times. If you use firefox I would install ySlow to see where your site is prior to installation and your load time once you have gzip compression and page caching in place. To make this plugin even more effective check out Askapache's Hacking WP Super Cache For Speed. His re-writing of the .htaccess file has proven to be quite effective.

3. Make the most out of your .htaccess file - by enabling Gzip Compression, adding an Expires Header, and disabling ETags you can definitely give your Wordpress blog a needed boost. Here is a glimpse at some of the things I do with my .htaccess file.

# Use PHP5CGI as default AddHandler fcgid-script .php ##################################################### # Expires Header Header set Expires "Thu, 15 Apr 2010 20:00:00 EST" ##################################################### # Mod_Deflate <IfModule mod_deflate.c> <FilesMatch "\.(js|css)$"> SetOutputFilter DEFLATE </FilesMatch> </IfModule> ##################################################### # BEGIN WordPress SetEnv HTTP_IF_GZ_MATCH .html SetEnvIfNoCase ^Accept-Encoding$ "(.*gzip.*)" HTTP_IF_GZ_MATCH=.html.gz RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} !=200 RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} !s RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /(.+)\ HTTP/ [NC] RewriteCond %{HTTP:Cookie} !^.*(comment_author_|wordpress|wp-postpass_|Facebook Connect API Number Here_user).*$ RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/wp-content/cache/supercache/%{HTTP_HOST}/%1/index%{ENV:HTTP_IF_GZ_MATCH} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /wp-content/cache/supercache/$1/index%{ENV:HTTP_IF_GZ_MATCH} [L,NC] # END WordPress ##################################################### # CONFIGURE media caching Header unset ETag FileETag None Header unset Last-Modified Header set Expires "Fri, 21 Dec 2012 00:00:00 EST" Header set Cache-Control "public, no-transform" #####################################################

This accomplishes quite a bit and I also block out known malicious IP addresses for additional security.

4. Add a php opcode cache - eAccelerator and xCache are two popular systems. You need to have a good working knowledge of .ssh terminal commands in Linux and must have root access to your server to effectively utilize php optimization and opcode caching. This will help with your blogs ability to perform server-side php functions by creating a stored cache.

5. Make your Permalinks Pretty - SEF canonical urls are a no-brainer yet a lot of blogger still don't get it. I'm always surprised to find major corporate sites that have sloppy link structure.

6. Make your code Valid XHTML and CSS, consolidating Javascript and CSS into two files - This can be laborious, but it is essential. I am a big fan of semantic tableless CSS. However from what I have read and heard it seems that Googlebot and most other bots don't really have a problem indexing tables.

7. Write compelling content with solid back links and make sure to ping! - This is not really an optimization technique. It's more or less a pre-requisite. RSS snippets that leave your readers wanting more is important. Check out Searchengine Land's 25 Tips To Optimize Your Blog For Readers and Search Engines for more.

8. Deactivate unused plugins - There are several plugins I used every so often for maintenance purposes, but that don't serve an everyday purpose such as WP-DB Manager, DB Optimize, and Wp-Maintenance (to launch a quick maintenance splash page.)

9. Add rel=no follow to all sites you display in you link directory that have a page rank of 5 or less - This might be considered controversial, but to keep up with the big boys you have to pay careful consideration to who you back link to and why. Back links should fall into a related genre to what the mission your blog desires to achieve. Blogroll links need to also be site related.

10. Marry Facebook and Twitter on your blog - I encourage integrating the Facebook Connect API so users can login with their encrypted Facebook account and add a follow me on Twitter link either in your sidebar or at the bottom of your post page.

Including the Sociable social bookmarking plugin by Joost de Valk is also a suggestion. It's important to create meaningful footprints. If you provide relevant information that readers appreciate they will want to talk about it, share it, and thank you for it. It's pretty simple. Of course shamelessly self promoting your blog on Facebook and Twitter is a must! That is if you believe in what you write... I would like to thank askapache, Joost de Valk, and everyone else that contributes to making Wordpress a better and more reliable blogging platform. Their knowledge has helped me become better at what I do.

Google Plans a PC Operating System

Google Plans a PC Operating System - NYTimes.com
Published: July 8, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO — In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs that is tied to its Chrome Web browser.

The software, called the Google Chrome Operating System, is initially intended for use in the tiny, low-cost portable computers known as netbooks, which have been selling quickly even as demand for other PCs has plummeted. Google said it believed the software would also be able to power full-size PCs.

The move is likely to sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of the vast majority of personal computers.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," said Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director, in a post on a company blog. "We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the Web in a few seconds."

Mr. Pichai and Mr. Upson said that the software would be released online later this year under an open-source license, which would allow outside programmers to modify it. Netbooks running the software will go on sale in the second half of 2010.

The company likely saw netbooks as a unique opportunity to challenge Microsoft, said Larry Augustin, a prominent Silicon Valley investor who serves on the board of a number of open-source software companies.

"Market changes happen at points of discontinuity," Mr. Augustin said. "And that's what you have with netbooks and a market that has moved to mobile devices."

But while Google has deep pockets and a vast reach, it is in for a difficult battle when it comes to challenging Microsoft in the operating system market. Many companies have tried this over the years, with little success.

Google's plans for the new operating system fit its Internet-centric vision of computing. Google believes that software delivered over the Web will play an increasingly central role, replacing software programs that run on the desktop. In that world, applications run directly inside an Internet browser, rather than atop an operating system, the standard software that controls most of the operations of a PC.

That vision challenges not only Microsoft's lucrative Windows business but also its applications business, which is built largely on selling software than runs on PCs.

Google said Chrome OS will have a minimalist user interface, leaving most space on the screen to applications.

"All Web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite Web technologies," the company said.

Google has already developed an open-source operating system called Android that is used in mobile phones. The software is also being built into netbooks by several manufacturers.

But Google has not encouraged netbook makers to use Android. The company appears to be positioning Chrome OS as its preferred operating system for netbooks, though it said competition between the two systems would likely drive innovation.

"It makes total sense," Mr. Augustin said. "Android wasn't really meant for netbooks."

Google had planned to unveil the project on Wednesday but moved up the announcement after receiving inquiries from The New York Times, which reported the company's plans on its Web site late Tuesday. Ars Technica, a technology news site, also reported the outlines of Google's plan late Tuesday.

Google released Chrome last year, describing it as not only a Web browser but also a tool to let users interact with powerful Web programs like Gmail, Google Docs and online applications created by other companies. Since then, Google has been adding features to Chrome, like the ability to run such applications even when a user is not connected to the Internet.

Google said Tuesday night that it still had work to do to develop a full-fledged operating system. In a recent interview, Marc Andreessen, who created the first commercial Web browser and co-founded Netscape, said Chrome itself was already well along that path.

"Chrome is basically a modern operating system," Mr. Andreessen said.

The first wave of netbooks relied on various versions of the open-source Linux operating system, and major PC makers like Hewlett-Packard and Dell have backed the Linux software. Intel, the world's largest chip maker, has worked on developing a Linux-based operating system called Moblin as well. The company has aimed the software at netbooks and smartphones in a bid to spur demand for its Atom mobile device chip.

To combat these efforts, Microsoft began offering its older Windows XP operating system for use on netbooks at a low price. In addition, the company has vowed that its upcoming Windows 7 software, due out this fall, will run well on the tiny laptops, which have stood out as the brightest part of the PC market during the global economic downturn. Microsoft's current Vista operating system is designed for more powerful machines.

Linus Upson
