Muziic now plays YouTube and Vevo videos without ads

Muziic now plays YouTube and Vevo videos without ads

by Sebastian Anthony (RSS feed) Dec 31st 2009 at 11:08AM

Quickly! Before it gets shut down! Muziic, a web app developed by a sixteen-year-old teenager, now offers YouTube and Vevo videos without ads.

We originally covered it back in March and until Christmas Day, Muziic was simply a desktop-based downloadable program. Now, however, it's a full-featured web app -- and it's really rather good! It has a smooth, quick interface and a neat playback bar that sits at the bottom of the window. Playback isn't interrupted as you surf either; cool.

The problem is, not only does it draw on-demand content from YouTube (which is fine), but it also takes content from Vevo... without the pre-roll ads! The thing is, this isn't actually Muziic's fault, it's YouTube's. The YouTube application interface (API) also links into Vevo, and it doesn't seem to include the ads. We can only assume this will be fixed soon -- or Muziic will be forced to somehow include the ads.

Muziic offers a service comparable to, or better than, the wide range of streaming music web apps already on the Internet. I'm tempted to use it simply because a kid coded it -- he was just 15 when Muziic first launched. Did I mention there's an iPhone app for it coming soon too?

Open Source E-Commerce: Winners and Losers in 2009

Open Source E-Commerce: Winners and Losers in 2009 — eCommerce-Guide.com

By Kerry Watson
December 29, 2009

For the last year we have compiled monthly statistics on the top Open Source eCommerce programs, including several free or nearly-free proprietary programs that are sold for less than some OSC programs. "Open Source" means free to look at and to modify, not free of cost: about half of the top OSC programs reviewed are sold for a fee.

The statistics we compiled include the raw Google search results for each of the programs. Over time the results become more meaningful as trends and rankings emerge. We discuss the methodology at the end of this report.

OsCommerce has enjoyed a long reign as the most popular Open Source eCommerce (OSC) program, with Zen Cart close behind. While osCommerce and Zen Cart still remain the most popular programs in terms of Google's raw search results, Magento and several other newer carts have been rising rapidly. At the current rate, Magento is projected to overtake osCommerce by August, 2010.

The Contenders

We followed twenty-three programs over the past year, which represents approximately 50 million Internet pages both at the beginning and at end of the reporting period, for a consistently stable industry population. The programs researched include: osCommerce, Zen Cart, Magento, XT-Commerce, Cube Cart, X-Cart, PrestaShop, Quick Cart, Ubercart, CRE Loaded, CS Cart, osC-Max, Shopify, Virtue Mart, Zeus Cart, EOS Online Merchant, osCommerce Project (now osQuantum), Lite Commerce, Open Freeway, Dash Commerce, OSC-SS, IOMPI, and JadaSite.

In terms of number of pages, seven of the OSC programs gained a significant number of pages over the last year, thirteen programs lost, and two programs (Cube Cart and osQuantum (formerly the osCommerce Project) held steady throughout the year.

In terms of rank order, osCommerce and Zen Cart remained at the top, the Russian-based X-Cart dropped three slots to end in sixth position. This allowed California-based Magento, the German-based XT:Commerce, and the UK-based Cube Cart to each move up one position.

The Biggest Winners

Magento is far and away the winner in the page popularity contest, more than doubling the number of pages over the past year. This is a rate of nearly a half million pages added each month. Magento 1.0 was released in March, 2008.

But PrestaShop jumped the highest in rank order, leaping five positions from 12th to 7th. It wasn't even in the Top 10 one year ago. PrestaShop 1.0 launched in July 2008, the most recently released program we studied.

XT:Commerce gained at a rate of nearly 200,000 pages added each month. However, due to stiff competition the program dropped in rank by three positions to finish the year in sixth place.

Top Ten E-Carts for 2009
Rank December 2009 January 2009
1 osCommerce osCommerce
2 Zen Cart Zen Cart
3 Magento X-Cart
4 XT:Commerce Magento
5 Cube Cart XT:Commerce
6 X-Cart Cube Cart
7 PrestaShop Quick Cart
8 Quick Cart CRE Loaded
9 Ubercart Ubercart
10 CRE Loaded osC-Max

The number of pages on UberCart slightly increased from 629,000 to 740,000. However, it began and ended the year in ninth position.

In the up-and-coming-new-programs category, EOS Online Merchant increased from nearly 27,000 to 58,200 pages. However, due to changes in positions of other programs, it decreased in rank from fifteenth to sixteenth.

The Biggest Losers

During the last year, the popularity of osCommerce plummeted 54 percent, losing 16 million pages. At the time of this report, the Grand Dame of the OSC world still has more than twice the number of pages as Magento. However at current rates, osCommerce and Magento will each have 11 million pages next July, and by August Magento will have surpassed it.

Zen Cart also steadily declined in popularity, sliding from a peak of 11 million pages down to slightly more than eight million by December 2009. This is a run rate of a quarter of a million pages lost every month this year.

The Zen Cart team has promised a new release each year since 2007; however, in April of this year it gave the vaporware a new number — Zen Cart 2.0 — and still did not release it.

CRE Loaded dropped only two positions, from eighth most popular to tenth. However, it lost about half the number of pages it had at the start of the year. It began with about 1.5 million and ended with about 600,000 pages. The CRE Loaded team made some marketing blunders that were not well-received by their market and, despite many mea culpas, apparently never regained their audience.

They also shifted their strategy to focus on a payment module program called CRE Secure and doggedly pushed store owners about PCI Compliance, but the marketing messages were confusing. The typical online store owner will learn confusing industry acronyms when necessary, not when it is convenient for vendors.

Likewise, osC-Max dropped two positions, from 10th place to 12th. It lost about 25 percent of the number of pages it had a year ago. The osC-Max team made no major changes over the past year, so the losses are likely due to the general migration toward Magento.

Virtue Mart, formerly known as mambo-phpShop, lost about a thousand references per month over the last year, starting and ending the year in fourteenth position. Virtue Mart is an OSC program designed as a plug-in for the Mambo or Joomla content management system.

LiteCommerce is a light version of X-Cart. The group lost about 13% of page references over the past year. Interestingly, the team has focused its attention away from both Litecommerce and X-Cart on a new, 100% AJAX-based program called ECWid that can be integrated with any web site in about five minutes. We will report on and begin following this program through the next year.

Shopify lost nearly 100,000 pages over the course of the year, dropping from 312,000 to 215,000. Shopify is a hosted ecommerce solution - no installation required - for small online retailers built on Ruby on Rails. It was started in 2006.

Holding Steady

Cube Cart and osQuantum maintained the same levels of page popularity throughout the year, ending the year with a non-significant change in number of pages related to their programs.

Cube Cart is available in both a free version and a for-fee version. Originally released in 2003, it has maintained a small feature set that is very stable. While it is not based on osCommerce, many of the functions are very similar and therefore familiar to those migrating from osCommerce programs.

The osQuantum group (formerly the osCommerce Project) came out with a bang a little more than a year ago when a splinter group of osCommerce programmers became weary of waiting for the next release of osCommerce to make its way through the group's bureaucracy. The group quickly finished the current version of osCommerce and added some valuable security features to it.

However, marketing and/or copyright issues caused the group to suddenly withdraw their finished version and re-focus their energies on their own program, osQuantum. The group has been quiet for the past few months, apparently hard at work.

Methodology

We performed a Boolean Web search on the same date each month for each of the top OSC programs. Boolean searches use mathematical operators, i.e. AND, OR, NOT and (), to get the most accurate results possible. Repeating the same search over time allows patterns to emerge and thus makes the data more meaningful. Our results and rankings are based on the total number of Google results pages reported for each program at the time the search was conducted.

Ecommerce Website Design – Five Tips For Success

Ecommerce Website Design – Five Tips For Success|Website Design Tips and Tutorial|by Webguru India
Posted in: Technology Sunday 27th, December 2009
In today's generation of Internet, there is no longer any need to build retail shops in order to sell goods. As an alternative Ecommerce website can be a much easier mean of business and an Ecommerce Website Design can be the key to success. Following are the five tips in order to make ecommerce website design a success:-
  • Ecommerce Website Design Success Tip 1 – Proper showcase of products
    Your ecommerce website design should be done keeping the customers in mind. It should be simple and navigation should be easy to understand. The Website design should be done in such a way so that the customer should understand what are the products that you want to sell. The products should be highlighted either on the side or there should be a dropdown menu for the products. If there is any offer, money back or exchange scheme then your website must show it. For best result, the products should be positioned strategically.
  • Ecommerce Website Design Success Tip 2 – Make it user-friendly
    Your website design should be done in such way so that customer can easily navigate options without facing any difficulty. Customer should be provided with the shopping cart option and he should also be a given a chance to select and reject items at his will. The website should be user friendly for customer satisfaction.
  • Ecommerce Website Design Success Tip 3 – Increase of sell by cross selling products
    Your ecommerce website design can help you to increase your sell. The website should suggest some other products to customers that will complement the product that they have bought. This can be done by using pop ups against the product name.
  • Ecommerce Website Design Success Tip 4 – Provide an option to check out as a guest
    Many ecommerce website designs are done in such a way that they force the customers to create an online account. But customers may not like to share their personal details. Therefore, for this there should have an option that will allow visitors to check products as a guest without furnishing any confidential detail. In this way without forcing customers to share their personal and sensitive information you can increase your sale.
  • Ecommerce Website Design Success Tip 5 – Take security measures for your customers
    In order to have good business with your customer your ecommerce website design must ensure full security to its customers. Nowadays due to many cases of identity-theft, customers may not be comfortable sharing their personal details. So in order to assure them about their security a SSL certificate must be added to the website which will be protected by recognizable companies.

China's Latest Knockoff: Ubuntu in XP Clothing

Linux News: Distros: China's Latest Knockoff: Ubuntu in XP Clothing
By Katherine Noyes
LinuxInsider
12/29/09 4:00 AM PT

What looks like XP but perhaps behaves better? A version of Ubuntu that sports the XP user interface, currently available in Chinese for download from the Web. Whether Microsoft will attempt to assert its intellectual property rights is unknown -- and the legal status of the OS is far from clear.

Chinese-language consumers unwilling or unable to pay the cost of a legitimate copy of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows XP now have a new alternative: a clone of the operating system that's based on Ubuntu.

Dubbed "Ylmf OS," the software is available from Rain Forest Wind Guangdong Computer Technology as a free download on a dedicated Web site.

The system is based on Ubuntu 9.10 and integrates Wine, according to the page. Also included are OpenOffice 3.1, CompizConfig Effects Settings Manager, Firefox and Pidgin for instant messaging.

Canonical, the company that serves as Ubuntu's commercial sponsor, could not be reached for comment by this story's deadline.

'I Don't Recommend It'

Uncovered last Saturday by Download Squad, the Ylmf hack is actually not the first instance of Ubuntu being made to look like Windows.

In what may or may not be a coincidence, an Ubuntu fan who goes by the name of Phrank Waldorf received considerable attention on the Linux blogs just a few weeks ago by posting a similar hack, also using Ubuntu 9.10 to emulate Windows XP.

"I don't use this. I don't recommend it, either!" Waldorf wrote. "I actually made the script as a programming exercise."

The response, however, was likely more than Waldorf had expected. Countless enthusiastic comments were left by readers on Waldorf's page, including at least one asking permission to translate it for a Chinese blog.

'Far More Interesting Work to be Done'

It's not entirely clear why Linux fans -- many of whom are overtly hostile towards Microsoft -- would want to emulate Windows with open source technology.

Indeed, in the open source community, "the general sense is there is far more interesting work to be done differentiating and competing with Windows rather than emulating it," Jay Lyman, an analyst with the 451 Group, told LinuxInsider.

It's also not likely such technology holds much promise going forward, Lyman added, "particularly as we see more support for Windows in Linux and other open source software and more support for Linux and other open source in Windows."

'A Brazen Effort'

In China, however, it seems at least possible that a Windows clone based on open source software could present a potentially more legitimate alternative to widely available pirated versions. User modification is fully expected in the world of open source software, after all.

On the other hand, can it be acceptable to use open source technology to closely mimic the graphical user interface of a proprietary counterpart? The legality is far from clear.

"Rarely does a brazen effort to pilfer the intellectual property of others appear so blatant as with the Ylmf OS product being circulated in China," Raymond Van Dyke, a partner with Merchant & Gould, told LinuxInsider.

'Clear Aim to Interfere'

"The Chinese government should proactively do what they can to squelch this obvious act of hacking and copying a well-known product covered by various patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, both in the U.S. and in China," Van Dyke asserted.

While "legitimate reverse engineering of functionalities is acceptable in the U.S., one cannot wholesale copy a protected product, although some functionalities may be worked around," he explained.

More troubling, however, is "copying the exact design or style of the product, which pirates have absolutely no excuse to copy -- apart from their clear aim to interfere with the sales Download Free eBook - The Edge of Success: 9 Building Blocks to Double Your Sales of the legitimate owner or otherwise trade on the owner's good name," Van Dyke added.

Better Than the Real Thing?

"If this is an effort to pass off the XP desktop theme as the XP operating system, I don't think it is going to work," Joe Casad, editor in chief of Ubuntu User magazine, told LinuxInsider.

"The irony is that this faux Windows system will be safer, more stable and less susceptible to malware than the system it is pretending to be," Casad noted.

Still, "it never really helps to manipulate the customer," he added. "We say that every day to Microsoft, and we would certainly say the same thing to people who are trying to make money by imitating Microsoft."

If the Rain Forest Wind Guangdong company "finds that it gives them a competitive edge to distribute Ubuntu to their customers, they should just admit it," Casad concluded. "It will be better for both their users and their tech support to have menus that match the underlying system."

Google's Open-Source Manifesto Tells the Truth

Google's Open-Source Manifesto Tells the Truth - BusinessWeek

As with its Android platform, Google has flourished by sharing source code in ways that lure eyeballs. "The Meaning of Open" explains how and why

Jonathan Rosenberg, senior vice-president of product management at Google (GOOG), put up on Dec. 21 what was more of a tome than a mere post on the company's blog. Entitled "The Meaning of Open," it was originally sent to Google employees as an e-mail, but it reads like a manifesto.

Arguments have raged for years about exactly what is entailed by an open-technology strategy, as opposed to a closed one. In the open-source community, the free software definition explicitly states that truly free software means "free as in speech, not free as in beer." It further explicitly states that freeware—software applications that you or I can use without paying—differs from true open-source software, whose source code we can view and change.

Rosenberg's open manifesto goes well beyond the concept of open-source software, however, in that he goes on to tackle open standards, the value of an open Internet, and the overall concept of open information. He writes: "To understand our position in more detail, it helps to start with the assertion that open systems win. This is counterintuitive to the traditionally trained MBA, who is taught to generate a sustainable competitive advantage by creating a closed system, making it popular, then milking it through the product life cycle. The conventional wisdom goes that companies should lock in customers to lock out competitors…Open systems are just the opposite."

"Open" doesn't mean altruistic

While Google is far from perfectly open in every aspect of its business, it is one of the largest contributors of free, open-source code and the company does indeed do transformative things through open efforts. The best, most recent example would be the enormous success that Google's open-source Android platform has become. There are nearly 20 Android handsets from major manufacturers, and the operating system is spreading to other devices.

Let's not get snookered here. Although Google has published Android's source code, the company wants Android and applications that run on top of it to steer as many users as possible to Google's lucrative search-and-ad ecosystems. Those ecosystems are not entirely open. Nor are the details on personal habits and information that Google collects entirely transparent.

One thing I really liked about Rosenberg's essay is that he confesses this. "Our commitment to open systems is not altruistic," he writes.

There you have it. I don't question Google's commitment to openness across many of its efforts. But I don't believe for a second that Google approaches the concept of openness without considering its self-interest. Make no mistake: Google preserves openness because openness serves Google.

OLPC unveils slimline tablet PC

BBC News - OLPC unveils slimline tablet PC

By Jonathan Fildes
Technology reporter, BBC News

OLPC XO-3

The group behind the $100 laptop has revealed the design for its latest computer aimed at connecting children in the developing world.

The XO-3, as it is known, is a slim-line touchscreen tablet PC.

One Laptop per Child (OLPC) said it would be "available in 2012" and would cost "well below $100".

The new design replaces the proposed XO-2, a foldable e-book that was first shown off in 2008 but has since been scrapped by the organisation.

The XO-3 will eventually replace the original XO laptop that first went into production in 2007.

The innovative machines, which have been designed for use in remote and harsh environments, were designed for use by school children and featured a sunlight readable display and open source software.

'Bigger appeal'

OLPC originally aimed to sell the low-cost laptops in lots of one million to governments in developing countries for $100 each.

However, the non-profit organisation had difficulty getting governments to commit to bulk orders. The machines - which are able to run both Linux and Microsoft Windows - are now offered in single units and cost around $200.

the new xo-s laptop
The XO-2 has been scrapped in favour of the XO-3

So far the XO has been distributed to more than 1.4 million children in 35 countries.

The high-price has not however put off all governments. Uruguay has bought a computer for every one of their school children.

Walter de Brouwer, CEO of OLPC Europe said that these "saturation projects" were the future of the organisation both in the developed and the developing world.

"I'm talking to three four countries in the EU at the moment," he told BBC News. "Once one says yes, the others can't say no."

The organisation believes the new design will cost significantly less.

Mr Brouwer said that because of the pace of technological change and the ever decreasing prices of electronics he could imagine the design selling for "50, 60 or 70 euros".

He said governments could pay this back over a number of years, allowing pupils to have a laptop for less than one euro per month.

"This is very realistic," he said.

The concept shows a touchscreen, a camera, induction charger, and a carrying ring on one of its corners.

Its inner workings - including a chip from UK firm ARM - will come from an interim design - the XO 1.75 - set for launch in 2011.

The 1.75 will merge elements of the current machines with technologies - such as a touchscreen - intended to be included in the XO-3.

OLPC recently said that the organisation would just focus on promoting its concepts and educational aims, rather than manufacturing laptops.

"We are not a laptop company," said Mr Brouwer. "Manufacturing a laptop is not such a big deal. The bigger appeal for us is deploying them and integrating them with education systems to transform a society."

Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of the group, said that he hoped that industry would now copy the design for the XO-3.

InfoWorld's 2009 Bossies spotlight today's Top 40 open source products for business and IT pros

If you think you can easily whittle down the best open source software to a manageable number, you'll soon discover that you can't do it without a great deal of hair pulling, nail biting, and gnashing of teeth. There are just too many excellent tools. Even if you give up on a "manageable" number and go whole hog -- say, a top 100, which is certainly doable -- you'll still face too many hard decisions and too many arguments. You'll be looking for a way out.

To bring you this year's 40 top open source products -- our 2009 Bossie winners -- we pulled a couple of fast ones. Our first inspired dodge was to come up with the InfoWorld Open Source Hall of Fame. There's a certain number of obviously great open source solutions (we settled on 36) that deserve a hall of fame, and though our annual Bossies selection regularly passed over most of these because of their sheer obviousness, a few inevitably complicated the process. Erecting the hall of fame allowed us to honor these inconvenient legends -- the Linuxes, BSDs, Sendmails, and Snorts -- once and for all.

[ See the slideshows of the 2009 InfoWorld Bossie Award winners: The best of open source developer tools | The best of open source enterprise software | The best of open source networking software | The best of open source platforms and middleware. ]

Our second shortcut was to omit desktop productivity tools and focus strictly on enterprise software, application development tools, networking and network management software, and platforms and middleware. We covered some of the top desktop productivity tools in "The best free open source software for Windows" -- including Linux standards such as OpenOffice.org and Firefox -- but there's so much more to talk about. Once you start down this road, you have to walk a long way.

Free shipping at over 700 online stores today

CANOE Money - News: Free shipping at over 700 online stores today
By QMI Agency
2009-12-17 09:49:44

If you're like many Canadians and haven't started holiday shopping yet, consider taking advantage of free shipping day today at more than 700 online retailers.

All of this year's 726 participants, such as the Apple Store, Lululemon Athletica and The Body Shop, promise delivery by Christmas Eve.

The event began last year to extend the cyber shopping season for merchants and give procrastinators one last chance to order gifts before Dec. 24.

And many Canadians are last minute shoppers. According to a TD First Class Visa Holiday Shopping Survey released today, 38% of us put off our shopping because we're busy while another 11% admit we're lazy when it comes to facing the crowds.

The online promotion has nearly tripled in popularity this year from the just 250 retailers that took part in 2008.

Canadians should read online fine print carefully since certain restrictions may apply to shipping addresses outside of the U.S.

Review: 3 top Linux distros go for different users

Review: 3 top Linux distros go for different users

Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu Linux desktops may look alike, but they've got some important distinctions.
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols

December 16, 2009 (Computerworld) At first glance, there's little to differentiate between the latest releases of the top Linux distributions: Red Hat's Fedora 12, Novell's openSUSE 11.2 and Canonical's Ubuntu 9.10. They each use the latest releases of open-source applications and are based on recent Linux kernels. Each of the distros also includes open-source applications such as OpenOffice and Firefox. However, a closer look reveals real differences -- in fact, each is meant for a different audience.

Underneath the hood, each of the three uses the 2.6.31 Linux kernel, but above that, their differences begin to surface. Fedora and Ubuntu, for example, use GNOME 2.28 (the latest version) for their default desktop, while openSUSE uses KDE 4.3.1.

(略......)

Conclusions

If you're a Linux expert, Fedora is for you. If you just want a good, general-purpose desktop for home or work, then openSUSE is your best pick. And if you're new to Linux, and your computer gets along well with Ubuntu, Ubuntu is still a good choice.

Old School Browsing with w3m

Old School Browsing with w3m | Linux Magazine

Not to sound like a Luddite, but sometimes the old ways are best. When it comes to Web browsers, that's not very often, but knowing your way around a text-mode browser like w3m does come in handy from time to time. You probably won't want to switch, but after taking a look at what you can do with w3m, you might want to add it to your toolbox.

Generally, I focus on the cutting edge goodies for the Web, but this week I spent some time with w3m after a long hiatus and thought it might be fun to take a step back and look at the old school Web. I needed to convert a page of HTML to text on the fly, and one of the best tools I've found for that is w3m. It's also a pretty good, if extremely basic, Web browser if all you need to do is read pages on the Web.

Why muck with a text-mode browser? Certainly not because it's full-featured. Firefox, Chrome, Konqueror, or Opera, any other modern browser will get you more bang for the buck than w3m — though w3m's rendering speed is pretty impressive. But w3m has a few features that you won't find in other browsers that make it worth having around.

Checking Site Design

Your site may look picture-perfect in your favorite browser, but what about all the other browsers that you haven't had time to test? Does it degrade nicely for people on less functional mobile browsers? While the percentage of visitors who hit your site with less-functional browsers may be small, it's still important to make sure that the site is usable.

Throughout the life of a Web site, it's a good idea to occasionally fire up a text-mode browser like w3m and see what the experience is like when trying to read and navigate the site in a browser that's not equipped for fancy CSS layouts or JavaScript functions.

Browser of Last Resort

It has happened, albeit rarely, that I needed a way to get online when it wasn't possible to get to one of the GUI browsers. Either because X was broken, or when working at a server and needing to get to a download without X installed at all. You'll find w3m comes in very handy indeed when having to browse to a site and grab a file or files from the console.

It doesn't happen often, but I find about once or twice a year that I need to roll out w3m in a situation where Firefox or other GUI browsers just aren't available.

Converting HTML to Text

While using w3m for troubleshooting doesn't come up too often, it's not uncommon that I need to convert something in HTML to plain text — and I've found that w3m is a really handy tool to do so. Even on some complex pages, w3m has been good at converting HTML to usable text.

It's very easy to do, too. You can try it by running w3m -dump -T text/html filename.html > filename.txt. If you're converting an online document, simply replace the filename with the URL.

Scripting

Where w3m really shines is scripting. Which is to say, if you need a browser that can easily be used from a script, w3m is far superior to Firefox or any other GUI mode browser.

For instance, if you wanted to have a quick and dirty way to monitor a Web site, you could knock up a short script that would call w3m, check the content of the page, and then either exit quietly if all is well, or send a message to the person on-call to make sure that everything is up and running smoothly.

Using w3m

Getting w3m shouldn't be a problem. You should find w3m as part of the default installs of many Linux distros, and it should certainly be packaged up for all popular major distros these days.

If started without an argument, w3m will just display its help file, so you'll want to tell w3m what site or file to start with if you're browsing the Web:

w3m http://www.linux-mag.com/

Once you're in w3m, you'll need to know a few basic commands to navigate the Web. w3m uses standard Vim movement keys to move around a page, so l will move the cursor to the right, k will move up, j will move down, and h moves to the left.

To scroll more quickly, hit the Space bar, and to scroll backwards quickly through a page, hit b. To go back through your browsing history use the left arrow key or B.

The Tab key will put the cursor on the next hyperlink on the page (if there is one), and Shift-Tab will move backwards to the next hyperlink.

To follow a link, just hit Enter when you're on the link. If you want to type in a URL, type g and w3m will prompt you for the URL.

If you want to get to w3m's help, just hit H or ?, which should be pretty easy to remember.

Found a page you want to bookmark? Type a to add it to your bookmarks, and v to view bookmarks.

Finally, to exit w3m hit q and you'll be prompted to answer whether you're sure or not you want to exit. If you want to skip that, hit Q to skip the prompt.

I wouldn't want to spend all my time browsing the Web using w3m, but it does prove useful in a pinch.

How to reset my WordPress admin password?

How to reset my WordPress admin password?

You have to do this through the WordPress database directly. The most convenient way to manage the database is via the phpMyAdmin tool at your web hosting account.

Once in phpMyAdmin select the WordPress database from the drop-down menu on the left. The page will refresh and the database's tables will be displayed on it. Open the SQL tab (look at the top navigation bar).

In the text field write the following SQL query:

UPDATE `wp_users` SET `user_pass` = MD5( 'new_password_here' ) WHERE `wp_users`.`user_login` = "admin_username";

"new_password_here" - replace this with the new password you wish to use.
"admin_username" - replace this with the username the password should be updated for.

Once you are ready, click on the GO button to submit the query. If everything goes fine without errors, you should be able to login to WordPress with the new password.

If you have problems resetting the password yourself, ask your host for assistance. SiteGround provides the best WordPress hosting and such requests are handled with ease.

How to Move WordPress Blog to New Domain or Location

How to Move WordPress Blog to New Domain or Location » My Digital Life

For blogger who self-hosts the WordPress blog publishing system on a web hosting server with own registered domain name, sometimes, you may decide to reorganize the blog link URL to make it tidier or to reflect new focus or theme of the blog. If you decide to change the URL or link location of your WordPress blog due to changing of domain name (such as from http://www.old-domain.com/ to http://www.new-domain.com/) or the blog to another directory location (such as from http://www.domain.com/ to http://www.domain.com/blog/), there are some steps that should be done to ensure the proper migration and no breaking links.

The tricky part when moving WordPress blog to another location is that WordPress is using absolute path in URL link instead of relative path in URL link location when stores some parameters in database. Within blog posts' contents itself, users may also use the old URLs when creating reference backlinks. All these values in the database will need to be changed when WordPress is moved. The following guide will show you which database fields that has references or values related to blog's URLs that you want to modify. Note that this guide is not about how to move WordPress blog from one server or host to another new hosting service.

Once the blog has been moved (all files copy over in case of moving location or server or new domain name properly propagated across Internet for new domain name), the first thing to change is to tell WordPress the new blog location (wp-config.php should be no changes, and .htaccess file should be also no changes. If for some reason mod_rewrite rules for friendly URLs no longer works, you can always regenerate the .htaccess file via WP Administration's Update Permalinks page). This value can be changed via WordPress Options page, but if you no longer able to access to old blog URL, you have to modify the value via MySQL database.

Note: The guide uses SQL statements based on MySQL replace() function to modify the database. To run SQL queries, login to MySQL database that houses WordPress tables via phpMyAdmin or loginto the DB server and run MySQL client as root.

To update WordPress options with the new blog location, use the following SQL command:

UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = replace(option_value, 'http://www.old-domain.com', 'http://www.new-domain.com') WHERE option_name = 'home' OR option_name = 'siteurl';

After that you will need to fix URLs of the WordPress posts and pages, which translated from post slug, and stored in database wp_posts table as guid field. The URL values in this field are stored as absolute URLs instead of relative URLs, so it needs to be changed with the following SQL query:

UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, 'http://www.old-domain.com','http://www.new-domain.com');

If you have linked internally within blog posts or pages with absolute URLs, these links will point to wrong locations after you move the blog location. Use the following SQL commands to fix all internal links to own blog in all WordPress posts and pages:

UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace(post_content, 'http://www.old-domain.com', 'http://www.new-domain.com');

Browse through WordPress blog to check if everything is okay. You also need to re-login to WP Administration as authentication cookie has now became invalid due to different domain.

Introduction to the xmonad Tiling Window Manager

Introduction to the xmonad Tiling Window Manager | Tombuntu
Posted by Tom in software

(Tried, but removed, HL)

What good is having a large display if you're constantly rearranging windows to fit them on the screen? I got tired of try to fit a web browser with other smaller windows and decided to try xmonad, a tiling window manager that could do this for me.

A tiling window manager arranges your windows in a grid. This maximizes window sizes and prevents any window from obscuring another.

xmonad displaying a few windows

Installing xmonad
xmonad is available from the Ubuntu repositories. Install xmonad from the package xmonad (click the link to install), or by running the command below in your terminal:
sudo apt-get install xmonad

A number of dependencies will be installed with xmonad. They are needed because reconfiguring xmonad requires recompiling it. (Don't worry, this is handled automatically.)

I'd also highly recommend installing dmenu, a simple application launcher that integrates with xmonad. Install dmenu from the package dwm-tools (click the link to install), or by running the command below in your terminal:
sudo apt-get install dwm-tools

From the login screen, you should now be able to select an xmonad session and log in to start xmonad.

The basics of using xmonad
Note: All the keyboard commands you'll use with xmonad begin with what's called the mod key. The default mod key is the left alt key.

If no windows are open xmonad will just display a blank screen. Open a new terminal window with mod+shift+return. With only one window open, xmonad will let it use the entire screen.

Instead of running more applications using the terminal, let's use the dmenu launcher. If you have dmenu installed, pressing mod+p with open it on the top of the screen. Start typing to find an application, use the right and left arrows to select a result, and press return to run the selected application. Press escape to close dmenu if you decide not to run anything.

Open some applications so you have more windows to experiment with. Notice how xmonad splits the screen down the center. On the left side is the master pane by itself. On the right side all the other windows are displayed stacked on top of each other.

xmonad tall layout

Press mod+space to cycle though different tiling algorithms. By default there are three: tall (vertical split with master pane on left), mirror tall (horizontal split with master pane on top), and full (one window displayed full screen).

The currently focused window is displayed with red borders. You may have already noticed that you can focus a window by moving the mouse over it. On the keyboard, switch focus using mod+j (focus next window) and mod+k (focus previous window).

Perform the equivalent of clicking a conventional window manager's close box for a window by pressing mod+shift+c.

What if you want to move a window into the master pane? The simplest way to do this is mod+return, which swaps the currently focused window into the master pane. For finer control of where windows are displayed use mod+shift+j (move the focused window up) and mod+shift+k (move the focused window down).

If the master pane is not the right width (tall mode) or height (mirror tall mode), you can resize it using mod+h (smaller) and mod+l (larger).

Like most window managers, xmonad offers multiple workspaces. By default you get nine workspaces, each corresponding to a number key. Pressing mod+[num], where [num] is from 1 to 9, will switch you to that workspace. Use mod+shift+[num] to move the focused window to the specified workspace.

You may have noticed that some applications and dialog windows are not tiled normally. These are floating windows, which you can move and resize like windows in a conventional window manager. To float any window yourself, hold down the mod key and drag the window with the left mouse button. Once a window is floated you can move it around the screen in the same manner. Use the mod key and right mouse button to resize a floated window. Tile a window normally again by focusing it and pressing mod+t.

With these basics, you should be able to start using xmonad.

Reconfiguring xmonad
xmonad is configured using a Haskell source file (~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs); you will need to create this file for your user:
mkdir ~/.xmonad
touch ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs

The easiest way to get started customizing xmonad is using a template configuration file containing all the default settings and comments explaining what they do. Such a template is available on the xmonad wiki. Paste it into your ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs file. You'll probably want to change the myTerminal setting back to gnome-terminal (or your own preferred terminal) instead of xterm.

The mod+q key combo will reconfigure xmonad with your settings, and restart it. This process happens very fast and nearly seamlessly, you might miss it! If there's an error in the configuration file, xmonad will fall back to the previous settings and display an error dialog.

Read though the template configuration file and have fun customizing it to your tastes!

These are only the basics, you can do much more with xmonad than what I've covered. The xmonad documentation is a good resource if you want to learn more.

Google Analytics推出异步跟踪分析

Google Analytics

<script type="text/javascript">

var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXX-X']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script');
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' :
'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
ga.setAttribute('async', 'true');
document.documentElement.firstChild.appendChild(ga);
})();

</script>
