Google Street View to let you walk into shops soon?

Google Street View to let you walk into shops soon?

by Erez Zukerman (RSS feed) Feb 5th 2010 at 11:02AM

Apparently a small-time business in NYC called "Oh Nuts" claims Google paid them a visit and asked to take photos inside the store every six feet (that's every two meters for the rest of us), a-la Street View. They took photos of the aisles and of actual products.

Google say they're just experimenting and are not making any statements (how surprising), but still, it's an interesting prospect. If implemented on a broad scale, will it mean shopkeepers would have to keep their shelves super-neat until the Street View team comes along?

What if they decide to stop carrying a product? And if they've changed things around and decide they want the photos taken again?

I think the only way this can work is as a paid advertising service, with Google hiring out their photographers -- but then it would probably only be available in major cities. Still, I kind of like the idea because it sounds like something which could give the small guys a better chance and some exposure in their perpetual fight against big-time retailers.

Simple commands to manage apache2 sites and Modules

Simple commands to manage apache2 sites and Modules | Ubuntu Geek

This tutorial will explain some useful commands to manage apache2 sites and Modules
Apache2 Configuration Files Location

First we will explain what is there under /etc/apache2/ directory

sites-available - A list of configuration files - one per site. A blank install will contain the file default. The system admin can have as many sites here as they need - however - they will not all be active.

sites-enabled - A list of symlinks to configuration files in sites-available. A blank install will contain a symlink 000default to sites-available/default. The sites listed here are the sites which will be active. The site to be used if no virtual hosts match will be the first file found (hence the 000 on 000default).

mods-available - A list of configuration files - one or more per module. Each dpkg installed module will add files here. e.g. php4.conf and php4.load are added with the libapache2-mod-php package. Again - the system admin can install whatever modules they wish - however - until they are set available they will not be active.

mods-enabled - A list of symlinks to configuratioon files in modes-available. Only modules linked in here will be activated on the webserver.

Commands to use

a2ensite - a2ensite is a script that enables the specified site (which contains a <VirtualHost> block) within the apache2 configuration. It does this by
creating symlinks within /etc/apache2/sites-enabled.

Example

sudo a2ensite test

Note:- Test is the file you have created under /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ with the required configuration

a2dissite - a2dissite is a script that disables the specified site (which contains a <VirtualHost> block) within the apache2 configuration. It does this by removing symlinks within /etc/apache2/sites-enabled.

Example

sudo a2dissite test

a2enmod - a2enmod is a script that enables the specified module within the apache2 configuration. It does this by creating symlinks within /etc/apache2/mods-enabled.

Example

sudo a2enmod imagemap

Enables the mod_imagemap module

a2dismod - a2dismod is a script that disables the specified module within the apache2 configuration. It does this by removing symlinks within /etc/apache2/mods-enabled.

Example

sudo a2dismod mime_magic

Disables the mod_mime_magic module.

You can check the list of available modules under /etc/apache2/mods-available

How to Twitter for E-commerce Success

How to Twitter for E-commerce Success — eCommerce-Guide.com
By Vangie Beal
February 3, 2010

Twitter can be an important marketing and customer service tool for businesses, but it's easy to make mistakes. A business owner may hear about Twitter and decide to jump on the bandwagon and wrongly expect this micro-blogging service to be a substitute for a marketing or customer-service plan.

The best way to get the most out of Twitter is to incorporate the tool into your current strategies. Remember, Twitter can help your business — but it is not a complete solution on its own.

We take a look at one company's Twitter success and discuss the strategies it uses.

The Dell Outlet

The Dell Outlet is Dell's online Web shop for purchasing refurbished Dell computers and electronics. By bringing its outlet site to Twitter, Dell claims to have generated $6.5 million from its Twitter activities last year. In addition to the value of the direct sales via tweeting, the company has also realized revenue from people who start by following a Twitter link and continue on to other pages on the Dell Web site to buy a new computer.

Those numbers might sound impressive at first glance, but the actual dollar value is only a fraction of Dell's multi-billion-dollar annual sales. Still, it does show that online businesses — especially e-commerce Web shops — can realize a profit and sales through creative and effective business twittering.

How Dell Uses Twitter: Dell uses Twitter to send messages about the latest refurbished systems available in the Dell Outlet. It also tweets coupons and messages about clearance events. In February of last year, Dell started offering exclusive deals to Twitter followers in the United States. Dell's messages are tweeted out to more than 1.5m followers on the Twitter service.

What is Dell Doing Right?

The first thing to note, despite the Twitter media hype around Dell, is that its success did not come from using Twitter to create a new business model or sales channel. The Dell Outlet was already successful before it began tweeting. The company uses a special Web shop on its Web site and e-mail marketing to promote this small part of the business, and it integrated Twitter into its strategy for higher conversions.

Plus, the Dell Outlet Twitter account consistently targets the same audience and focuses only on the Dell Outlet in their tweets. There is no mention of newly launched Dell PCs or laptops or other electronics and services that you'll discover in other places on their Web site. The tweets are targeted and provide information that niche bargain hunters are looking for. Dell provides links on its Twitter profile for people interested in following other Dell businesses.

The Dell Outlet Twitter account is also personalized. They have removed the business tone from their Twitter presence by displaying a real name, contact information and photo of the spokesperson responsible for the Dell Outlet on Twitter.

Dell displays the business identity, but it places more emphasis on the person tweeting behind the corporate logo. When you bring your business in to social media it is important to present an individual face. People will always respond better to a person than a business a social media setting.

Lastly, Dell uses this Twitter account as a communication tool to respond to its Outlet customers. Followers who have purchased a deal from the Dell Outlet or those with questions about Dell coupons and deals can ask their questions via Twitter and the Dell Outlet follows up with the customer in a Twitter reply.

What's it Mean for Your Small E-commerce Business?

Here's the takeaway: you can study the marketing strategies that Dell uses on Twitter — with great success — and adapt them to suit your own e-commerce business.

Based on the success of corporations such as Dell, Zappos and others, you can incorporate the following strategies into your own Twitter presence.

  • Don't create a new aspect of your business just to tweet about it. Tweet about your core business — about what you do best.
  • Select one person from within your business to represent the company on Twitter. Make sure your followers know that person's face and name.
  • Keep your tweets relevant and focused. Rather than using one Twitter account for all your business tweets, create separate accounts and limit each account to one specific topic or theme.
  • Make sure your tweet has value for the customer. They don't care so much about your broken office air conditioner as they do a hot new product or super deal. Good tweets are those that invite a response or retweet from your follower.
  • Be responsive. If you customers use Twitter as the medium to initiate customer service or technical support conversations, follow up with them in Twitter.

How do I set up metatags for my Zen Cart site

Zen Cart(tm) Tutorials and FAQs - How do I set up metatags for my site, or...

Zen Cart is built with a feature to have separate meta tags for each Category and Products -- separate from the ones on general pages.

Categories
To define meta tags for a Category, go to the Admin -> Catalog -> Categories/Products once you're there..click on the meta tag icon (the last one to the right for any given category) and set your content.
Note: A meta tag must contain keywords and description or it is not considered complete, and will be ignored.

Products
If you want to define meta tags for individual Products, you will navigate to that product and click on the meta tag icon to define it.
Note: there are custom settings in Product Types so if you don't want, for example, products_price in the title ... you can globably set the defaults for 1 or all product types.

Common Site-Wide
To define site-wide tags such as charset, keywords and description, go to includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE_NAME/meta_tags.php and edit that file for keywords, site title, site tagline and site description.

*NOTE:* The references to "YOUR_TEMPLATE_NAME" mean that you should use the name of the folder of your custom template that you've built for your site.

Custom Site-Wide
For meta tags not covered by the previous paragraph, copy the includes/templates/template_default/common/html_header.php file to your includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE_NAME/common/ folder. Open it up and add your own meta tag to those already there by default.

TIPS
Search engines will index all of your pages ...
Build your pages to have proper text, meaning significant text, to increase their content value for search engines ...

While meta tags are helpful, they are not the end all and be all ...
The content is more significant ... the content relative to the meta tags is significant ...

Notice the custom meta tags for each Category and Product ...
Notice the categories_description and products_description ... these are highly important ... Your descriptions need to be content-rich and keyword-rich.

Lack of content is the major issue if your site is not getting good search engine rankings.

Force IE8 to Load and Display Websites in IE7 Compatibility View Mode

META Tags and Locking in Future Compatibility

By default, Internet Explorer 8 uses EmulateIE8 mode to display pages loaded from the Internet Zone. Web pages loaded from the Intranet Zone or with the Web Browser control are displayed in EmulateIE7 mode. These defaults can be changed

Specifying Compatibility Modes on a Per-Page Basis

To specify a document mode for your Web pages, use the META element to include an X-UA-Compatible http-equiv header in your Web page. The following example specifies EmulateIE7 mode compatibility.

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

The content attribute specifies the mode for the page; for example, to mimic Internet Explorer 7 behavior, specify IE=EmulateIE7. Likewise, specify IE=5, IE=7, or IE=8 to select one of those compatibility modes. You can also specify IE=edge to tell Internet Explorer 8 to use the highest mode available.

The X-UA-compatible header is not case sensitive; however, it must appear in the Web page's header (the HEAD section) before all other elements, except for the TITLE element and other META elements.

Specifying Compatibility Modes on a Per-Site Basis

A document mode can be specified for your Web site by defining a custom HTTP response header for the site using your Web server. An HTTP response header is the information a Web server attaches to the file it sends to your browser in response to the HTTP request and that usually contains information such as date, size, and type of file that is being sent back.

The following documents describe the steps required to configure your Web server to attach a custom HTTP response header to all of your Web pages. This will cause Internet Explorer 8 to use a specific document compatibility mode, such as EmulateIE7.

If you specify a default document compatibility mode using your Web server, you can override that setting by specifying a different document compatibility mode in a specific Web page. The mode specified within the Web page takes precedence over the mode specified by the server.
